Greece or the Hellenic Republic is in southeastern Europe on the end of the Balkan Peninsula, having borders with Bulgaria, Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the north and Turkey to the east. To the east and west of mainland Greece is the Aegean Sea whilst the Ionian Sea is to the west. There are also over 220 Greek Islands, but only 78 of them have more than 100 people living on them. The largest Islands are Crete, Euboea, Lesbos and Rhodes. Other smaller islands - such as Kos-are poplar as resorts.
The climate does vary from the freezing winters and very hot summers in northern Epiros and Macedonia to the Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and mild winters of the Dodecanese and some of the Peloponnese islands.
